Best Practices

Everything you need to stay safe, block ads, protect your privacy, and get the most out of every site in our library.

⚡ TL;DR — Do These 3 Things Right Now

  1. Switch to Brave Browser — blocks ads, trackers, and pop-ups by default
  2. Install uBlock Origin on Firefox for maximum ad blocking power
  3. Get Proton VPN (free) — hides your IP and encrypts your traffic

Do all three and you'll never see a pop-up, your ISP won't know what you're browsing, and every site in our library will work flawlessly.

🛡 Why You Need a VPN

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and hides your IP address from your ISP, hackers, and websites.

1 What a VPN Actually Does

Without a VPN, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can see every website you visit. They can throttle your speed, sell your browsing data, and even send you warning letters if you visit streaming or piracy sites.

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet. Your ISP only sees encrypted gibberish — they can't see what sites you visit, what you stream, or what you download.

2 When You MUST Use a VPN

  • Streaming sites (Movies & TV, Sports) — your ISP can see you're streaming pirated content
  • Downloading anything — torrenting without a VPN is how people get caught
  • Public Wi-Fi — coffee shops, airports, hotels. Anyone on the same network can intercept your data
  • Accessing geo-blocked content — connect to a server in another country to bypass restrictions

3 When You DON'T Need a VPN

For regular free tools like Photopea, TinyWow, Khan Academy, or any legitimate site — you don't need a VPN. These sites are safe and legal. A VPN is for privacy and protection, not for everyday browsing on trusted sites.

🚫 Setting Up Ad Blocking

Ad blockers remove pop-ups, banner ads, video ads, and malicious trackers. They also make pages load faster.

1 Desktop: Firefox + uBlock Origin (Best Combo)

This is the most powerful ad blocking setup available:

  • Install Firefox (supports full Manifest V2 extensions)
  • Install uBlock Origin from the Firefox Add-ons store
  • That's it — uBlock Origin blocks 100% of ads out of the box. No configuration needed.

Why not Chrome? Google is killing ad blockers on Chrome with Manifest V3. uBlock Origin on Chrome is being replaced with a weaker "Lite" version. Firefox is the only major browser that still supports full ad blocking.

2 Desktop: Brave Browser (Easiest Option)

If you don't want to install extensions, just use Brave Browser. It blocks ads and trackers by default with Brave Shields. No setup required. It's Chromium-based, so all your Chrome extensions still work.

Pro tip: Install uBlock Origin on Brave too for double protection on stubborn sites.

3 Mobile: Brave Browser (Android & iOS)

Mobile browsers don't support extensions well (except Firefox on Android). The easiest solution:

  • Android & iOS: Use Brave Browser — built-in ad blocking, no extensions needed
  • Android only: Firefox for Android supports uBlock Origin — install both for maximum blocking
  • System-wide (Android): Install Blokada — blocks ads in ALL apps, not just the browser

4 Bonus Extensions to Install

  • SponsorBlock — auto-skips sponsor segments, intros, and outros on YouTube
  • Unhook — removes YouTube recommendations, shorts, and comments for distraction-free viewing
  • ClearURLs — strips tracking parameters from every URL you visit
  • Privacy Badger — EFF's tracker blocker that learns as you browse

🔏 Choosing the Right Browser

Your browser is the gateway to everything online. Choose one that respects your privacy.

1 Why You Should Stop Using Chrome

Chrome is made by Google — the world's largest advertising company. Here's what Chrome does:

  • Tracks your browsing history and sends it to Google
  • Manifest V3 is actively weakening ad blockers (uBlock Origin is being nerfed)
  • Sends telemetry data about your usage patterns
  • Uses your browsing data to serve you targeted ads across the web

Every browser below is a better choice than Chrome for privacy.

2 Our Browser Recommendations

🦁

Brave Best Overall

Built-in ad blocking, fast, Chromium-based (all Chrome extensions work). Perfect for people switching from Chrome — feels identical but with privacy.

🦊

Firefox Best for Extensions

Open-source, fully supports uBlock Origin (Manifest V2), massive extension library. Most customizable privacy browser.

🐺

LibreWolf Pre-Hardened

Firefox with all telemetry removed and uBlock Origin pre-installed. Zero configuration needed — privacy out of the box.

🧅

Tor Browser Maximum Privacy

Routes all traffic through the Tor network for true anonymity. Slower, but impossible to trace. Use for sensitive browsing.

⚠️ Safe Browsing on Free Sites

Free streaming and piracy sites can be sketchy. Follow these rules to stay safe.

1 The Golden Rules

  • Never download anything a streaming site asks you to. No "video player updates," no "codec packs," no ".exe" files. Just stream.
  • Never enter personal information on free streaming sites. No email, no credit card, no phone number.
  • If a site asks you to register to watch — it's a scam ad. Close it and try again.
  • Always use an ad blocker (uBlock Origin or Brave). This blocks 99% of malicious content.
  • Use a VPN on streaming and piracy sites to hide your IP from your ISP.

2 Red Flags to Watch For

  • 🚩 "You need to update your Flash Player" — Flash is dead. This is malware.
  • 🚩 "Your computer is infected!" — Fake virus warnings. Close the tab.
  • 🚩 "Download our app to watch" — Never download apps from streaming sites.
  • 🚩 "Complete a survey to unlock" — Survey scams. Close and try another source.
  • 🚩 "Enter your credit card for free trial" — Nothing on these sites costs money.
  • 🚩 Multiple redirects before the video plays — Use an ad blocker to prevent this.

3 Check If You've Been Compromised

Visit Have I Been Pwned to check if your email or phone number has appeared in any data breaches. It's free, safe, and run by a respected security researcher. If your data has been breached, change your passwords immediately and enable two-factor authentication.

▶️ Blocking YouTube Ads on Every Device

YouTube is the worst offender for unskippable ads. Here's how to block them everywhere.

1 Desktop (Windows / Mac / Linux)

  • Best: Firefox + uBlock Origin — blocks all YouTube ads, 100%
  • Easy: Brave Browser — blocks YouTube ads by default
  • App: FreeTube — standalone desktop YouTube client, zero ads, no tracking

2 Android Phone

  • Browser: Brave Browser — open YouTube in Brave, no ads
  • App: LibreTube — privacy-focused YouTube frontend, no ads, uses Piped API
  • App: Grayjay — blocks ads on YouTube, Twitch, Nebula, and more in one app

3 Android TV / Fire TV Stick

SmartTube is the answer. It's a free, ad-free YouTube client designed specifically for TVs. Features: no ads, SponsorBlock built in, 4K/HDR support, background playback. Sideload it on any Android TV or Fire TV Stick.

4 iPhone / iPad

  • Browser: Brave Browser — open YouTube in Brave for ad-free viewing
  • Safari: Install Vinegar ($2) — replaces YouTube's player with Safari's native player, removing ads

5 Bonus: Skip Sponsors Too

Install SponsorBlock on any browser. It's a crowdsourced extension that automatically skips sponsor segments, intros, outros, self-promotion, and "like and subscribe" reminders. Works on YouTube in any browser.

🌐 Network-Wide Ad Blocking (DNS)

Block ads on EVERY device in your home — TVs, phones, tablets, game consoles — with one setup.

1 What is DNS-Level Blocking?

DNS is like the phone book of the internet — it translates website names into IP addresses. DNS-level ad blocking works by refusing to look up ad server addresses. When your device tries to load an ad, the DNS says "that address doesn't exist" and the ad never loads. This works on every device on your network, even ones that don't support ad blocker extensions (smart TVs, game consoles, IoT devices).

2 Easiest: Change Your DNS Settings

The simplest option — just change your router's DNS to an ad-blocking DNS provider:

🔵

AdGuard DNS Free

Set your DNS to 94.140.14.14 and 94.140.15.15. Blocks ads and trackers network-wide. Takes 2 minutes.

🟠

NextDNS 300K queries free

Cloud-based DNS with a dashboard to customize what gets blocked. Free for 300,000 queries/month (enough for most homes).

3 Advanced: Pi-hole

Pi-hole is a self-hosted DNS server you run on a Raspberry Pi ($35) or any Linux machine. It blocks ads on your entire network with a beautiful dashboard showing stats. It's the gold standard for home network ad blocking, but requires some technical setup.

📱 Mobile-Specific Tips

Most people will visit sites from their phone. Here's how to get the best experience.

1 The Perfect Mobile Setup

  • Browser: Brave Browser — blocks all ads and pop-ups natively
  • VPN: Proton VPN app — free, unlimited, one-tap connect
  • Android extra: Blokada — system-wide ad blocking for all apps
  • DNS: Set your phone's Private DNS to dns.adguard-dns.com for system-wide ad blocking

2 Setting Private DNS on Android

This blocks ads in ALL apps — not just the browser:

  • Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS
  • Select "Private DNS provider hostname"
  • Enter: dns.adguard-dns.com
  • Tap Save. Done — ads are now blocked system-wide.

3 Setting DNS on iPhone

iOS doesn't have a simple Private DNS setting, but you can:

  • Install the AdGuard DNS profile from their website (free)
  • Or install the NextDNS app from the App Store
  • Both block ads system-wide on iOS with one tap
